How do I work with you?
My counselling approach is gentle and person-centred, incorporating attachment theory and trauma-informed practise, with an understanding of internal family systems, as well as utilising a strengths-based approach. I draw upon my post-graduate training in process orientated psychology (also known as process work) and other evidence based practices, such as CBT and DBT. The therapeutic process is a holistic, integrative and sensitive collaboration alongside the client, with an understanding of the (scientifically proven) link between the body, mind and emotions.
Areas that Counselling and Psychotherapy can help you with include:
Sometimes there may be an obvious issue that is troubling you. It may be something major in your life that needs to be addressed and explored. However, at times you may dismiss smaller disturbances as insignificant, but then find they continue to niggle at you and keep emerging. This may be an indication that your attention is required at this early stage before it becomes a larger, more problematic issue.
Unfolding your Process
Whatever the issue may be, I work with you to gently explore, unfold and follow your process through your signals (both intended and unintended signals, such as facial expressions, body language, sounds and gestures) and various other channels of communication (often hidden in your unconscious) that interplay and emerge during a session. When working with you, I respond to your feedback and am responsive in my approach. This method helps to deepen awareness, gain more clarity, access your inner wisdom and innate knowledge which can bring forth the relevant aspects required to deal with your current challenge or issue.
Body Symptoms
We can also work with your body symptoms, both current and chronic conditions. The body is a wise integrated system that sends signals for you to bring to your conscious awareness. Our body symptoms give us information that is on one level symbolic, such as back pain may generally be interpreted as a lack of support. However, this work goes beyond the general, into the individual, personal message and inner wisdom that your body symptom is communicating to you, that is relevant to your current issue so that you can then apply this in your life.
Dreams
Often, our dreams also hold valuable information that is relevant to a current issue. Therefore, dream-work may be part of the session.
Life Path
Sometimes a session may lead us to explore your life path and look at patterns and challenges that tend to recur. This can give you deeper self understanding and self compassion for the difficulties you face. With growing self awareness, and building upon your skills to deal with challenges, you can view your life from a new perspective and feel more empowered.
People often leave our sessions with a sense of peace, having gained new perspectives and insights that are transformative. Previous barriers and obstacles that limited progress and caused difficulties are better understood and integrated.

What your body symptoms want you to know
The body is a wise integrated system that communicates to you through signals (and symptoms). Your body symptoms aim to bring important information into your conscious awareness. On one level body symptoms appear symbolic, for example, hip pain may indicate a need to move forward and possible fear around major decisions. However, this work can go deeper into unfolding the body symptom to reveal more hidden information, personal messages and wisdom, so that you can then apply it in practical ways in your current situation.
For example, one client had pain in her legs. During the unfolding process, as we explored the felt sensation of this body symptom, she used her imagination to describe the sensation as: receiving a strong blow to the legs and being cut down at the legs. She found this metaphor was relevant to her work situation as she was being undervalued and undermined at work. She said this was a revelation to her.
Often the information is not in our awareness until we are gently guided and the process is unfolded. Step by step, we can gain the insight and intelligence from our body symptoms and the possible action that would be helpful for your situation.
Furthermore, when working in this way, the therapeutic process continues until the client is empowered by gaining access to her skills and capabilities to deal with the issue.
Whilst clients often report their symptoms are alleviated after doing this work, it is important to medically attend to body symptoms with your health professionals.
